Rams safety Matt Daniels, who underwent major knee surgery for an injury suffered while blocking on a punt return last season in England, was hurt on a similar-looking play Sunday when rookie Benny Cunningham rolled up onto Daniels during a first-quarter kickoff return.
Daniels, a second-year pro, suffered a fractured ankle Sunday and has been placed on injured reserve.
Daniels, who made the team as an undrafted free agent last year, was hurt in the preseason finale against Baltimore and had been playing with a cast on his right hand.
“Matt’s going to require season-ending surgery at some point this week,’’ coach Jeff Fisher said. “It’s difficult for Matt, having worked hard off the ACL (surgery) and to have this happen, but he’ll bounce back. He’s a tough young man.’’
Fisher said that right tackle Rodger Saffold, who left in the second quarter with a knee injury, is “day to day.’’
“We’ll have more information on Wednesday,’’ the coach said.
Joe Barksdale took over for Saffold.
To fill Daniels’ spot on the roster, the Rams claimed tackle Mike Person off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. Person, 25, stands 6 feet 4 and weighs 299 pounds.
A product of Montana State University, Person was drafted in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He’s also spent some time with the Indianapolis Colts.
